LEGAL JUDGMENTS ARE mocking British Values

How can our children demonstrate mutual respect and tolerance when the Lord Chief Justice says ‘Christian belief about family life is incompatible with JP (Justice of the Peace) duties’.  What nonsense! Read more

The statement from the judicial conduct investigations office says that the magistrate ‘was found to have been influenced by his religous beliefs and not by the evidence’.  Rather, it was Christian beliefs, and Christian beliefs are part of the constitution of British law.

So let us get this straight. Children have to show ‘mutual respect and tolerance’ to other faiths and beliefs, but the overseer of British courts says that Christian magistrates cannot act according to their beliefs.

However, according to the government’s statement of British values in The Prevent Strategy 2011, children to be taught to respect the rule of law, which says that every citizen is subject to the law including the law-makers themselves.   Thomas Fuller, a prominent English Churchman and historian said in 1733, “Be ye never so high the law is above you.”

Having abandoned God’s law, Britain now has different administrations of law competing with each other - Westminster, Brussels, the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh and Northern Ireland Assemblies, and even Sharia law.

The Queen solemnly promised and swore “to govern the Peoples of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Union of South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon, and of your Possessions and the other Territories to any of them belonging or pertaining, according to their respective laws and customs.”

She also promised to “the utmost of her power to maintain the Laws of God and the true profession of the Gospel”. She promised “to the utmost of her power to maintain in the United Kingdom the Protestant Reformed Religion established by law... To maintain and preserve inviolably the settlement of the Church of England, and the doctrine, worship, discipline, and government thereof, as by law established in England.”  Which law?  This is the Christian constitution of Britain, giving expression to itself in British values.

Surely the Lord Chancellor and the Lord Chief Justice should uphold this law, not the secular agenda to change it.  The secular contempt for British constitutional law has opened the door in the UK for European legislation to steamroll over British law and for Sharia law to gain a foothold.

Such attitudes make a total mockery of the government’s promotion of ‘British values’. According to it, the fundamental British values are democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values were set out by the government in The Prevent Strategy 2011.

How neat to wrap up 800 years of history in five simple phrases. The Magna Carta ‘the Great Charter’ taught that everyone, including the king, is subject to the law. Clause 39 states that free men have the right to justice and a fair trial. The Magna Carta is not only foundational to our constitution, but it influenced the United States Bill of Rights (1791) and many other constitutional documents around the world, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and the European Convention on Human Rights (1950).  The Christian Party believes in habeus corpus and in being innocent until proven guilty.  We thoroughly disagree with the unchristian European principle of corpus juris in which the defendant must prove his innocence, or in its simplest terms, is guilty until proven innocent.

An article in The Telegraph last year entitled ‘The core British values that define our nation’ stated that British values are not just theoretical; they are rooted in the institutions and history that underpin the nation, about which politicians are often ambivalent or are reluctant to praise unequivocally for fear of offending someone. When the last government introduced citizenship classes for immigrants, it was a practical guide to living in Britain and what the entitlements of citizenship might bring, unlike America which extols a love of country, its rituals, democratic practices and even the free market.

Values are not simply a long list of sound bites.  We wonder why Britain even needs to state its values if they are so inherently at the heart of the nation. Unfortunately, rather than teaching immigrants what made our nation great, we have bowed to political correctness, capitulated and appeased various groups rather than communicating clearly what are our own values.

As Britain gave way to secular multiculturalism, it became more difficult to teach our values consistently. As we eschewed our Christian heritage in favour of secular culture, we could no longer hold our head high and declare those principles that we have defended for centuries. Consequently, David Cameron’s government picked eight to ten nice, uncontentious words out of the dictionary and declared them to be our ‘British values’.  They have simply chosen buzz words to suit and justify their agenda.

So what did The Telegraph conclude were our British values? Those listed include: the rule of law, the sovereignty of the Crown in Parliament, tolerance, personal freedom and a presumption against state coercion, free speech and freedom of expression, a belief in private property and the freedom to buy and sell without fear of confiscation, to transfer ownership, to sign contracts and have them enforced, those institutions that are quintessentially British and capture and reflect its character, the monarchy, the Armed Forces, the Church, the BBC, history and culture, love of sport and of fair play. and patriotism - a real and generous love of country. This is marginally better than the government’s list, but it still falls far short of the Christian British Values that the Christian Party supports.

What about the ten commandments?  God is sovereign, don’t have idols, honour God’s name, keep the Sabbath rest day, honour your father and mother, don’t murder, don’t commit adultery, don’t steal, don’t lie against your neighbour and don’t covet other people’s property.  These are foundational to Britain’s Christian heritage. By these principles, children once grew up knowing right from wrong.

In summary, defining British Values is a deep and complex task because they are steeped in tradition, custom and faith and, until recently, there was no need to articulate them as everyone understood what made us British.  Multiculturalism has muddied the waters.

The Christian Party is campaigning to restore the Christian British Values of freedom of conscience, the sovereignty of British constitutional law, support for the family, the basic building block of society, and the supreme value of human life in order to put them at the very heart of our nation.  These are essential and core matters.

If government ministers believe so strongly in the concept of British values, we call upon them to celebrate 15th June, the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta, as a national holiday.

Put British Values ahead of European ones.  Sir Peter Tapsell, after serving Her Majesty and the Crown for almost 60 years, stated as he left office: “My greatest achievement was voting against Maastricht.”

The Christian Party calls on every candidate in the General Election to sign The 2015 Declaration of British Values in order to send a clear message to the electorate that whatever else they may accomplish in their political career, they will strive to uphold these precious and indispensable values.

The Christian Party is standing candidates in England, Scotland and Wales, but as a small party it cannot stand in every constituency. Instead, the Christian Party’s Vision and contribution is to help every voter to vote for a candidate who upholds the Word of God - whatever their party allegiance. The Christian Party believes that the need of the hour is to promote truth.
